Le quatrième jeudi de novembre, c’est Thanksgiving aux Etats-Unis. La semaine dernière, Daddy B. avait donc un week-end de quatre jours (son entreprise lui a gentiment fait cadeau de son vendredi) et nous nous sommes plongés dans les traditions américaines de fin d’année.

Thanksgiving n’est pas une fête célébrée en France, mais c’est l’une des fêtes les plus importantes aux Etats-Unis. Alors que nous avions bien quelques souvenirs de Halloween passés en France ou à Singapour, cette fois-ci nous étions complètement novices en la matière.

Enfin novices, pas tout à fait quand même…

En effet, nous en connaissions les bases fondamentales grâce aux séries américaines, que nous adorons et dont les scénaristes nous concoctent bien souvent un épisode spécial à cette occasion!

The fourth Thursday of November is Thanksgiving in the United States. So last week, Daddy B. had a four-days weekend (his company has kindly given him Friday) and we immersed in American traditions of holidays season.

Thanksgiving is not celebrated in France, but this is one of the most important holidays in the United States. While we had a few past Halloween memories in France and Singapore, this time we were completely new to this.

Well new, not really …

Indeed we knew the fundamentals through the American series, which we adore and whose writers often prepare a special episode on this occasion!

Un peu d’histoire

A glimpse of history

 

Thanksgiving, littéralement la journée d’action de grâce, trouve sa source au début de l’histoire des Etats-Unis d’Amérique à l’époque des premiers colons. Ceux-ci connurent des difficultés pour s’installer à leur arrivée et ce sont les indiens qui les aidèrent à chasser et à cultiver les produits locaux. Pour les remercier, les colons partagèrent avec les indiens un repas de fête. Au fil des années, cette célébration s’est institutionnalisée. En 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclame un jour national de Thanksgiving, et depuis ce jour, cette fête est célébré tous les ans aux Etats-Unis.

Thanksgiving is rooted in the early history of the United States of America at the time of the first settlers. They experienced difficulties on their arrival and the Indians helped them to hunt and cultivate local produce. To thank them, settlers shared with Indians a feast. Over the years, this celebration became institutionalized. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day and from that day, it has been celebrated every year in the United States.

Quant on connait l’origine de cette fête, on peut donc être surpris… se souvenir de la reconnaissance que les premiers colons ont eu pour un peuple qu’ils ont ensuite décimé, cela peut paraître assez incongru!

En famille ou entre amis

De nos jours, le côté historique est un peu mis de côté. Thanksgiving est devenue surtout une fête que l’on célèbre entourés de ses proches. On en profite pour se réunir autour d’un bon repas, se remercier de l’année passée ensemble et des bons moments partagés. C’est en quelque sorte le jour de l’année où l’on se pose pour apprécier et être reconnaissant de toutes les bonnes choses qui nous entourent.

Today, the historical side is a little set aside. Thanksgiving is mainly a holiday that people celebrate, surrounded by their family and friends. They take the opportunity to get together around a good meal, thank all the good times shared during the past year. This is somehow the day of the year when you just appreciate and are grateful for all the good things around you.

Les scénaristes en profitent parfois pour faire tourner la jolie fête de famille en règlement de compte plus ou moins affiché.

Pour cette année, il nous manquait donc l’ingrédient essentiel pour fêter correctement Thanksgiving : nos proches!

Nous avons donc décidé pour cette année, que notre Thanksgiving à nous s’articulerait surtout sur la découverte des mets spécifiquement préparé à cette occasion.

For this year, we didn’t have the most important thing to properly celebrate Thanksgiving: our loved ones!

So we decided this year that our Thanksgiving will be mainly about tasting the specific dishes prepared for this occasion.

 

De quoi se compose donc le repas?

Pour maintenir la tradition mise en place dès le début de cette fête, on prépare des plats avec les ingrédients de base qu’on appris à chasser et cultiver les premiers colons grâce aux indiens.

In order to keep the tradition in place since the start of this holiday, dishes are prepared based on local ingredients that the first settlers learned to hunt and cultivate thanks to Indians.
